Russ Porterfield

After graduating from the University of California, Davis in 1975, I started as an agent for State Farm in Santa Clara, California in 1976. I wanted to work for myself in an industry that I could feel good about helping others. Insurance was the answer and I wanted to work with a leader in the industry so State Farm Insurance was the choice.

Since 1982 I have had the opportunity to serve as a State Farm Insurance Agent serving Siskiyou County with an office in Mount Shasta, CA. I thought raising my sons in a small town was preferential to the metro bay area. That proved to be a good move for my family.

Mount Shasta gave me the opportunity to get involved in the culture and politics of the area. I served four complete 4 year terms on the City Council which included the honor of sitting as Mayor four times. I also served two partial terms serving out retiring council member’s terms. I started on the planning commission a couple of years before my city council service. I was a Boy Scout Leader, earning their Silver Beaver Award. Chamber of Commerce Board Member and President was also part of my community involvement. Currently, I am a member of the Mount Shasta Rotary Club and the local Elks Lodge.

Over the years as an agent, I discovered that making a difference in people’s lives was critical to my self-worth. After finding that life insurance was a key piece to every policyholder’s insurance plan, I went back to school and received my CLU, ChFC and CASL professional designations becoming a source of financial information for my policyholders. Now, much of my time involves retirement planning and coaching.
